Sock fluff & toast crumbs – Stories from the Owner

Stories about our animals

How Ralfie is actually a minecraft sheep! : Our lovely, but rather large Texel cross breed sheep is HUGE. Like horse sized huge….and I do not think he realises it. He walks through things not round them – buildings, fences, other animals, anyone stood in the way. Like the building game Minecraft and the characters in it, he also has quite a square shape. A lot of the chickens actually ride on his back at feeding time, as they do with the other sheep too (they use them as dining tables!). Ralfie is friendly and loves a head scratch and is VERY food motivated…. We’ve had Ralfie since he was a lamb. He arrived here with 2 goats. He will live out his years here as a much loved member of the team. His fleece is actually brilliant for creating insulation, for bird nesting and for crafting projects. Thankyou for your lovely curly fleece Ralfie! 🙂

Alan and the Margarets : I can often be found shouting the name Alan across the fields here. Alan is a LEGEND here. He, and his wives (the Margarets) are for life and not for Christmas. These are heritage breed single breasted bronze turkeys. Although people think turkeys are ugly looking, their feathers actually have rainbows in them – the sheen is amazing. So many guests and visitors leave with a very different view of turkeys after being here. Infact all the birds are socially complex and highly intelligent (although I do wonder about some hahaha). They are all tame….and free ranged…(which usually means eating all my flower heads off on the farmyard, knocking / pecking on the glass in the door, and going to all the places on the farm I don’t want them to be despite having loads of land to forage in).
